Lesley Frenz

Acrylic and watercolor
I was born and raised in coastal North Florida and received my Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Florida where I studied Art History and Painting. An avid hiker and backpacker, I find inspiration in wild places and my current practice is centered around the exploration of the intersectionality between the spiritual and earthbound in the form of abstracted landscape paintings. I live with my husband in Mount Vernon, Washington, a small town nestled in the Skagit Valley between the North Cascades mountains and the Salish Sea.

  • Describe an object that has inspired you
Do mountains count as objects? The North Cascades mountain range is basically our backyard and my husband and I spend as much time as we can hiking, backpacking, and camping in that wilderness. While I don’t paint direct representations of specific places, the North Cascades undoubtedly inspires much of my recent work.
  • Describe a place that has inspired you
The Pacific Northwest. Traveling through the Northwest spurred me to begin painting seriously for the first time in years. From my little PNW studio, I can find endless inspiration in from waters of the Puget Sound, to the tall pines and cedars, to the agricultural valleys, to the rugged Olympic and North Cascade mountain ranges and everything in between.
  • Describe a person that has inspired you
Georgia O’Keeffe was the first artist I became full on obsessed with in my freshman year of college. Her way of depicting the landscape, her love of being immersed in the outdoors, her strength and determination.. All of it continues to inspire the way I approach my work and my life.
