Acrylic

Foam

Foam reminds me of wonder, evanescence, spring, and, yes, sea foam. This piece required a lot of focus on the believable contrast of warm, golden color and cool shadows, as well as a consideration of negative space.

This painting really resonates with me which is why I'm so excited to share it. I'm thinking of it as a friend that's easy to be around--every step of the process felt very natural and fluid. I forced myself to stop working on it as soon as I felt stiff or hypercritical, so I think, in that way, I was a friend to it too.

About

Jo Coyle

Eager to create everything from abstract mixed media pieces and contemporary portraits to pattern designs and upcycled tins, Jo considers her work to be led by an internal "art roulette." With unending curiosity and an unwillingness to commit to one subject or style, she challenges her creative boundaries and assumptions whenever she can for the sake of making art that evokes subjective, emotional reaction. Jo graduated from Mount St. Mary's University with a BA in Fine Art, after studying fine art and film at the Carver Center for Arts & Technology in Towson, MD, and has recently rediscovered her passion for art after leaving the corporate marketing world in 2019. Experiencing the beginning of the pandemic while pregnant rekindled her artistic practice, as well as her appreciation for art as a safe outlet with which to filter a growing awareness and anxiety of the unknown.

Jo Coyle

describes their creative process

I usually take a think, pour some espresso or some whiskey depending on the time of day, and just kind of get started. Nothing too ritualistic here, as often as soon as I get an idea, it goes out the window if I don't get it down immediately. I blame it on my ADHD.
